Your First Week: What to Expect

The first week is the biggest adjustment period—here is what it looks like

Day 1-2: Adjustment Period

Your teeth and mouth will feel different. Braces may feel bulky at first, and aligners may feel tight. This is completely normal. Your teeth are beginning to move, and your mouth is adjusting to the new appliances.

Day 3-5: Mild Discomfort

You may experience soreness or sensitivity, especially when chewing. Stick to soft foods, use orthodontic wax if needed, and take over-the-counter pain relief if necessary. This discomfort usually peaks around day 3-4.

Day 6-7: Getting Used to It

Discomfort begins to fade. You will start adapting to eating, speaking, and cleaning with your braces or aligners. Most patients report feeling much more comfortable by the end of the first week.

Week 2+: New Normal

By week two, most patients forget they are even wearing braces or aligners. Eating and speaking feel natural again. You will settle into your care routine and appointments will become part of your regular schedule.

Types of Appointments

What happens at each type of visit

Adjustment Appointments

Frequency: Every 6-8 weeks (braces) or 8-10 weeks (aligners)

Duration: 20-30 minutes

For braces, we will change wires, check your progress, and make adjustments. For aligners, we will check your progress and give you your next set of aligners. These appointments are quick and usually painless.

Progress Check-Ins

Frequency: As needed

Duration: 10-15 minutes

Quick visits to check on a specific concern, replace a broken bracket, or ensure everything is tracking as planned. We are always available if you need us between regular appointments.

Emergency Visits

Frequency: Rare, but available

Duration: 15-30 minutes

If something breaks or causes significant discomfort, we will get you in as soon as possible. True orthodontic emergencies are rare, and most issues can be handled quickly.

Living with Braces or Aligners

How orthodontic treatment fits into your daily life

Eating

With Braces

Avoid hard, sticky, and chewy foods. Cut hard items into smaller pieces. No popcorn, gum, or hard candy.

With Aligners

Remove aligners before eating anything. Eat whatever you want, then brush before putting aligners back in.

Oral Hygiene

With Braces

Brush after every meal and floss daily with special tools. Takes extra time and care to clean around brackets and wires.

With Aligners

Remove aligners to brush and floss normally. Clean aligners with soap and water. Easier hygiene than braces.

Sports & Activities

With Braces

Wear a mouthguard for contact sports. Braces are durable, but a mouthguard protects your teeth and appliances.

With Aligners

Wear aligners during non-contact activities. Remove for contact sports and wear a mouthguard. Replace aligners after activity.

Special Events

With Braces

Braces stay on 24/7. You will get used to them in photos and videos. Clear ceramic braces are more discreet if appearance is a concern.

With Aligners

Remove aligners for photos, events, or presentations if desired. Just remember to put them back in afterward and hit your 20-22 hour daily wear.

Speaking

With Braces

Slight lisp or adjustment for the first few days. Your tongue will adapt quickly, and speech will return to normal within a week.

With Aligners

Minor lisp possible at first, especially with retainers. Most people adjust within 2-3 days and speak normally.

When Will I See Results?

Progress happens gradually—here is what to expect over time

1-2 Months

You will start to notice small changes. Teeth begin shifting into position. You are settling into your routine.

3-6 Months

Visible changes appear. Crowding improves, gaps start closing, and alignment is noticeably better. Friends and family will start commenting.

6-12 Months

Major improvements are clear. Your bite is aligning, and your smile looks dramatically different. You are past the halfway point for most cases.

12-18 Months

Fine-tuning begins. Teeth are mostly aligned, and we are perfecting spacing, bite, and final details.

18-24+ Months

Treatment complete for most cases. Braces come off, and you receive your retainers. Time to show off your new smile.

Common Concerns Answered

The questions we hear most often from new patients

Will it hurt?

Orthodontic treatment is not painful, but you will experience soreness and pressure, especially after adjustments or when switching to a new aligner. This discomfort is temporary and manageable with over-the-counter pain relief. Most patients describe it as pressure, not pain.

How long will treatment take?

Most cases take 12-24 months, though some may be shorter or longer depending on complexity. Dr. Oliver will give you an estimated timeline during your consultation. Compliance (wearing elastics, aligners as directed) greatly affects treatment speed.

Will I look different with braces?

Yes, braces are visible—but most people do not care as much as you think. Braces are common and widely accepted. If discretion is important, clear ceramic braces or aligners are great options. Remember, the result is worth the temporary change.

What if something breaks?

Brackets, wires, and bands can occasionally break or come loose. This is not an emergency. Call us, and we will get you in to fix it. Most repairs take just a few minutes. If something is poking or irritating, use orthodontic wax until your appointment.

Can I still play sports or instruments?

Absolutely. Wear a mouthguard for contact sports. For instruments, there is a brief adjustment period, but most musicians adapt quickly. Aligners can be removed for performances or games if needed.

What if I do not wear my elastics or aligners?

Non-compliance will extend your treatment time and may compromise your results. Braces work 24/7, but elastics and aligners require your participation. If you commit to the plan, you will get the results you want on schedule.
