The Most Important Phase of Orthodontic Treatment
Getting your braces off or finishing your aligner treatment is an exciting milestone—but it's not the end of your orthodontic journey. Retention is the phase where you maintain your results and protect your investment. Without proper retainer wear, your teeth will shift back toward their original positions.
The good news? Wearing your retainers as directed is simple, and it ensures your smile stays straight for life.
Why Retention Is Critical
Retainers are just as important as the braces or aligners that straightened your teeth
Teeth Naturally Want to Shift
Even after orthodontic treatment, your teeth have a natural tendency to drift back toward their original positions. Retainers hold them in place while the surrounding bone and tissues stabilize.
Lifelong Commitment
Retention isn't just for a few months—it's a lifetime commitment. Just like you maintain your teeth with brushing and flossing, retainers maintain your orthodontic results.
Protect Your Investment
You've invested time, effort, and resources into achieving your perfect smile. Wearing retainers as directed protects that investment and keeps your teeth straight for life.
Prevent Costly Retreatment
Teeth that shift after orthodontic treatment often require additional treatment to correct. Consistent retainer wear prevents this unnecessary expense and hassle.
Types of Retainers
We offer several retainer options—Dr. Oliver will recommend the best fit for your case
Removable Clear Retainers
Clear plastic retainers (similar to Invisalign) that fit over your teeth. They're nearly invisible, comfortable, and easy to clean.
Advantages:
- Virtually invisible when worn
- Easy to remove for eating and cleaning
- Comfortable and custom-fit
- Allow you to see your smile clearly
Considerations:
- Can be lost or damaged if not stored properly
- Require discipline to wear consistently
- Need replacement every 1-2 years with regular wear
- Can discolor if not cleaned properly
Removable Wire Retainers (Hawley)
Traditional retainers with a metal wire across the front of your teeth and an acrylic plate that sits against the roof of your mouth or behind your lower teeth.
Advantages:
- Very durable and long-lasting
- Adjustable if minor tooth movement occurs
- Easy to clean
- Available in various colors and designs
Considerations:
- More visible than clear retainers
- May affect speech initially
- Bulkier than clear retainers
- Wire may irritate lips or cheeks at first
Fixed (Bonded) Retainers
A thin wire bonded to the back of your front teeth, usually on the lower arch. It stays in place 24/7 and you can't remove it.
Advantages:
- Works 24/7 with no compliance needed
- Can't be lost or forgotten
- Completely invisible from the front
- Great for patients who had significant crowding or rotation
Considerations:
- Requires special flossing techniques
- Can trap food and plaque if not cleaned well
- Wire can break or come loose
- May make it harder to clean between front teeth
How Long Do I Wear My Retainers?
Retainer wear decreases over time, but retention is a lifelong commitment
First 3-6 Months
Full-time (except eating/brushing)
Wear your retainers 24/7, removing them only to eat, drink anything other than water, and brush your teeth. This is the most critical period for stabilization.
6 Months to 1 Year
Nights only
After the initial stabilization period, most patients transition to wearing retainers only at night while sleeping. Dr. Oliver will let you know when you're ready for this transition.
1 Year and Beyond
Several nights per week (lifelong)
After the first year, many patients can reduce wear to 3-5 nights per week. However, some cases require nightly wear indefinitely. The key is consistency—your teeth can shift at any age.
The Bottom Line
Every patient is different, and Dr. Oliver will give you specific instructions based on your case. Some patients can reduce wear sooner, while others need nightly wear indefinitely. The key is following your personalized retention plan—your teeth can shift at any age.
How to Care for Your Retainers
Proper care keeps your retainers clean, comfortable, and effective
Clean Daily
Brush your retainers gently with a soft toothbrush and mild soap or retainer cleaner. Avoid hot water, which can warp plastic retainers. Rinse thoroughly before wearing.
Store Properly
Always keep your retainers in their case when not in your mouth. Never wrap them in a napkin (they'll get thrown away!) or leave them where pets can reach them.
Avoid Heat
Never expose retainers to hot water, dishwashers, or direct sunlight. Heat can warp the plastic and ruin the fit.
Bring to Appointments
Always bring your retainers to your check-up appointments so Dr. Oliver can verify they still fit properly and check for wear or damage.

What Happens If You Don't Wear Your Retainers?
We see it all the time: patients who stop wearing their retainers and regret it months or years later when their teeth have shifted. Here's what typically happens:
- Your teeth will begin to shift within weeks or months of stopping retainer wear
- Front teeth often crowd or rotate first, especially the lower front teeth
- Spacing can develop where teeth were previously closed
- Your bite may change, leading to jaw discomfort or uneven tooth wear
- You may need orthodontic retreatment to correct the relapse
- The longer you go without retainers, the more shifting will occur
The best way to avoid this? Simply wear your retainers as directed. It's a small commitment that preserves your beautiful smile for life.
Lost or Broken Your Retainer?
Don't panic, but do act quickly. The longer you go without wearing your retainer, the more your teeth will shift. Contact our office right away and we'll get you a replacement as soon as possible. In the meantime, wear your backup retainer if you have one.
Retainer Replacement
We keep your records on file and can fabricate new retainers from your original molds or digital scans. If significant shifting has occurred, we may need to take new impressions or scans. Replacement retainers typically take 1-2 weeks to fabricate.
Your Smile Is Worth Protecting
You've worked hard to achieve your beautiful smile. Wearing your retainers as directed is the simple step that keeps it that way. Make retainer wear part of your daily routine, just like brushing your teeth, and your smile will stay straight for life.
Remember:
"Wear your retainers, or wear your braces again."
